Ski Instructor Course - Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the ski instructors frequently asked questions section, we hope you find all your answers here but if not please don’t hesitate to get in touch – either by email enquiries@gapskianddive.com or just give us a call at the GSD office on UK -0161 4010275.

What standard of skier do I need to be to do the ski instructors course?
You need to be a competent parallel skier on all pistes. Because your training is with BASS Megeve instructors you will receive the highest standard of British ski training. All staff have Level 4 ISTD qualifications. So even if you are a very experienced skier or have a ski racing background your level will be pushed and developed.
Am I guaranteed a qualification?
The levels for ski instructor qualification are set by BASI and upheld by the BASI trainers who deliver the Level 1 and Level 2 Ski Instructor courses. Therefore a qualification at either level cannot be guaranteed but GSD & BASS Megeve will provide the very best training, and preparation and opportunity to achieve these levels.
Where can I work with a BASI ski Instructor qualification?
The BASI Level 1 Ski Instructor qualification - allows you to work in “closed environments” such as a snow dome or artificial slope in the UK. &
The BASI Level 2 Ski Instructor qualification - allows you to work for a recognized ski school in “open mountain environments” in countries such as Switzerland, Italy, USA, & NZ. The individual laws of other countries will determine whether you can legally seek employment.
You will take both of these qualifications during the ski instructor course with GSD.
What are my job prospects after the course?
If you successfully pass the Level 2 Ski Instructor course then your job prospects are excellent. Through our extensive contacts and knowledge of the industry, we can assist you with finding employment on a part time or seasonal basis overseas and in the UK. This may even be possible straight after the course if you want to start work right away.
How do I book a place on the skiing and/or dive course?
To book on any of the GSD Instructor Courses please read the terms and conditions, then complete all fields in the application form(s) and send a signed copy back to us. Each booking requires a £450 deposit that you can pay by credit card, on the phone, by cheque, or BACS. The Deposit is neither refundable nor transferable. Full details can be found in our PDF brochure or on the bookings page.
How far in advance do I need to book?
GSD course places are LIMITED and operate on a first-come-first-serve basis and places are limited to 10 per course. We advise you to book sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.
What insurance will I need?
You will need personal winter travel insurance covering the EU and off piste skiing you may also need worldwide diving travel insurance if you are on the dive course.
A policy that covers both of these areas is available to our candidates through BASI at a special rate, this will be available to candidates after booking as you will have an associate membership to BASI allowing you to call the BASI office (01479861717) and purchase your insurance. Also there are many GAP year travel insurance schemes available that cover all of your needs.
Do I need a visa?
If you are an EU citizen then you don’t need a visa to visit or work in Europe.
If you’re a citizen from outside the EU, please check with your local embassy for specific visa requirements.
Do I need my own ski equipment?
It is recommended that you have your own ski equipment for the course however items can be hired in resort if required. Advice on skis & other equipment will be given when you are booked onto the GAP course. Any equipment offers available will be forwarded to students.
Where is the best place to buy ski equipment?
We advise that you buy most of your ski equipment in the UK before leaving for your course, OR at the very start of the course in the resort.
